Does size matter?
The X-mini II 2nd generation Capsule Speaker from Xmi is a tiny portable speaker that punches well above its weight.
You won't believe the quality of the audio from this tennis ball sized speaker and how well rounded the sound is.
With a power rating of 2.5 Watts, the X-mini II obviously isn't designed to replace your home speaker setup and won't impress your friends at your next big party but it's a fantastic way to listen to music at home or outdoors if you don't want to use headphones.
It's beautifully designed with a clever twist / pop-up action that isn't just a gimmick.
When closed and not in use, it makes the speaker even more compact and easier to carry around. It also protects the interior of the speaker from any knocks or damage.
When open, it helps create more airflow for much better bass reproduction. You can still use the X-mini II when it's closed but you'll lose a lot of the low-end bass which in most cases is not something you want.
The X-mini II comes in 8 different colours and all have the following features
- An On/Off switch
- An LED light that glows blue during normal operation or red if the battery is getting low
- An integrated volume control
- A USB mini port for charging the battery
- An integrated 3.5mm audio cable (12cm long)
- A 3.5mm port for daisy-chaining more X-mini II's together
- Rubber feet to absorb vibration
Plug and play
The X-mini II is wonderfully versatile and will plug into anything that has a 3.5mm headphone jack such as an iPod, Walkman, Tablet and almost all modern mobile phones.
In fact it's not just designed for portable devices and will just as easily plug into a desktop computer or laptop. The only downside is the cable is quite short so you might need to buy an extension depending on where you want to put the speaker.
Another neat touch is the integrated 3.5mm audio cable can be cleverly folded away around the bottom of the speaker when not in use.
The X-mini II is small, lightweight and cheap but delivers great sound. It's extremely well built and feels reassuringly tough.
It's compatible with any device that has a 3.5mm headphone socket which these days is pretty much any mp3 music player, tablet, phone or computer.
The rechargeable battery is good for around 11 hours of continuous use and if you only use the X-mini II occasionally, the battery seems to last forever!
Even small details are well thought out such as having rubber feet to avoid unwanted vibration if placed on a hard surface.
The fact that it can be 'daisy-chained' to other X-mini II's just adds to the appeal and provides you with a cheap and easy upgrade path should you want a bit more power.
It's a shame there isn't any wireless connectivity such as being able to connect a device via Bluetooth but at this price point that can be forgiven and it's certainly not a deal breaker.
(Xmi do a similar capsule speaker with Bluetooth connectivity called the X-mini Kai2 but this costs about £30)
The X-mini II Capsule Speaker gives you a big sound on a small budget. With a wide selection of colours to choose from, if you're looking to buy a bargain, ultra-portable, versatile speaker then look no further.
